Fall is a wonderful time to be on Cape Cod. Things start to quiet down, traffic gets lighter and the landscape starts to shift to fall foliage. It’s the perfect time for a scenic drive down Route 6A or some fun-filled outdoor activities. The Cape is known for its beautiful beaches, but there’s so much more to experience here, and fall is a great reminder of everything Cape Cod has to offer.
Cranberry Bog Tour in Harwich
September through November is cranberry season on Cape Cod, with bogs across the Cape being harvested. For an easy and quintessential Cape fall activity, Cranberry Bog Tours in Harwich is a great option for active adults. The bog is family owned and operated, giving visitors a true Cape Cod agricultural experience. Unlike other bogs, the Cakounes family offers tours year-round. This gives visitors the chance to learn more about cranberry farming no matter when they visit.
The tour lasts about an hour and a half. A guide drives the group around the bog while explaining what farmers do throughout the year to grow and harvest cranberries, starting in January and continuing through the fall harvest. The tour is geared toward adults and is more educational than physically demanding, with comfortable transportation around the bog. Tickets are $20 for adults, and reservations are required.
Pumpkinpalooza in the Park 2026

For Halloween-loving active adults, Pumpkinpalooza in Chatham is a fun way to see fall come to life on Cape Cod. Presented by the Chatham Chamber of Commerce, the event takes place in downtown Chatham at Kate Gould Park from October 14 through November 1. Local businesses, nonprofits and community members create fun pumpkin people and fall displays throughout the park, making it a great spot to take a leisurely walk and enjoy the season.
There’s no need to sign up for a scheduled tour, so visitors can explore the displays at their own pace. The walking route is also walker-friendly, making it an easy activity for seniors who want to get out and enjoy the fall weather without having to commit to a long or strenuous outing. With plenty to see at your own pace, it’s a great option for seniors looking for a simple, festive afternoon on the Cape.
Sandwich Glass Museum

For a different kind of fall outing, head to the Sandwich Glass Museum. Fall is a great time to explore more of Cape Cod’s history and local culture, and this museum offers an interesting look at Sandwich’s long history of glassmaking. The Sandwich Glass Museum has been in business since 1925 making it 101 years old. It held its first glass exhibit that year, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Boston and Sandwich Glass company founded in 1825.
Visitors can explore the museum’s collection and watch live glassblowing demonstrations, all while staying warm and comfortable indoors. It’s also a senior-friendly activity. The building is one level with accessible facilities and parking. The museum also recommends visitors give themselves 60-90 minutes to see everything the museum has to offer so there is minimal walking required.
Cape Cod Railroad

Another great way to enjoy the fall scenery is by taking a ride on the Cape Central Cod Railroad. As the weather cools down and the leaves begin to change, the train offers a relaxing way to see a different side of Cape Cod without having to do a lot of walking. The ride takes you through wooded areas, cranberry bogs, salt marshes and more, making it a nice way to spend an afternoon.
In October there is a brand new Halloween Train. On this, riders learn all about myths and legends of Cape Cod as well. It’s also a senior-friendly activity because you can sit back, enjoy the views and take in the fall scenery at a comfortable pace. For active adults who want to get out and explore but are looking for something a little less strenuous, a fall train ride is a great option.
Cape Cod Museum of Natural History Comes to Thirwood Place

Thirwood Place also offers events that bring local experiences right to the community. In October, the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History will visit Thirwood for a virtual guided tour of Wing Island in Brewster. This allows residents and visitors to experience the walk without leaving the comfort of home. The interactive presentation will be led by Elaine Roth, who will take attendees through the different areas of Wing Island. As she leads the presentation, everyone will have a table of Wing Island artifacts to examine, with help from the CCMNH Coastal Explorer Team.
The tour will also be presented by Thirwood resident Bud Ferris. Bud has worked with the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History for many years. The program is a great fall activity for active adults who enjoy learning about Cape Cod, exploring local destinations and staying engaged without a physically demanding outing. Come on down to Thirwood Place and join the fun. CCMNH is coming to Thirwood on Friday, October 23rd at 2PM. Please call 508-760-6531 to reserve your space.
