What is Thirwood Place?
What words come to mind when you think of Thirwood Place? For some it’s home, for others it’s comfort, peace or community. Thirwood Place is an active adult lifestyle community that’s been family owned and operated since 1989. While many senior living communities are run by large real estate investment firms, Thirwood is owned and operated by The Davenport Companies, a local, family-run business with a sterling reputation for quality and integrity.
When Thirwood Place was being developed the goal was to create a safe haven for those who are downsizing after retirement on Cape Cod. Thirwood’s main building has been compared to a cruise ship on land. With amenities and activities abound it has truly become the place to reside for those 55 and over.
A Vibrant Community

Socializing is a significant part of mental health. As you age you may not realize that it becomes more difficult to socialize daily, especially if you spend a lot of time at home. That’s where activities come into play. At Thirwood Place there is something for everyone. Into fitness? We have a wide variety of classes catered to the needs of those who attend. Enjoy the arts? We have live musical performances and lectures organized by our Activities Coordinator every month. Maybe you enjoy games like Bingo, Rummikub, or Bridge? There is definitely a group for you at Thirwood Place.
Activities help our residents to create a weekly schedule for themselves that incorporates things they enjoy. In addition to regular weekly activities, we have special events too! Each month Thirwood residents enjoy a themed night with socializing, dinner and some form of entertainment.

In September, to say goodbye to summer, we had a lobster boil in our main dining room. Afterwards, everyone headed into the auditorium for the first installment of Club Thirwood. For Club Thirwood, the team transformed the auditorium into a dinner theater. Our residents enjoyed a full bar, their dessert of strawberry shortcake and a performance of Tony Bennet Duets presented by Brave Horse Music.
Yes, these events make for amazing afternoons and evenings filled with laughs, smiles, and memories, but they also serve a greater purpose. The goal of the Thirwood team is to make life as comfortable and safe as possible for residents so they can thrive and live long healthy lives. Activities and events make for built in socializing which impacts a resident’s overall health and happiness without them even noticing.
Resident Designed Activities
As previously mentioned, activities make for built-in socialization which could not be more important in an active adult living community. Additionally, Thirwood residents have taken it upon themselves to organize activities and groups of their own. Each week, resident Pat Loan leads an intellectual discussion related to a chosen book.
Right now, her group is discussing “Women’s Ways of Knowing” by Mary Field Belenky, Blythe McVicker Clinchy, Nancy Rule Goldberger, and Jill Mattuck Tarule. This book is based on interviews with 135 women that explores how women develop their sense of self, voice, and knowledge, often feeling silenced despite the women’s movement. Pat’s group is so well-attended that they have to find a new space in the building because the Conservatory has gotten too small for all the attendees.

Our residents also have the Residents Association. Quarterly, there is a meeting where every resident has the opportunity to share good news, questions, or concerns. Each section of the building has a representative to speak on their behalf and all the different committees from dining to aesthetics share their report from the last quarter. The Residents Association also has an incredible scholarship program.
According to our Residents Association, this fund was “established to provide a means of awarding scholarships to students who are either employees of Thirwood Place or are dependents or grandchildren of employees.”The program offers up to $2,000 per academic semester in financial aid for any student fulfilling the requirements set forth by the scholarship committee. This would apply to a student who attends any recognized college or technical/trade school. They can also be full-time or part-time. Thirwood residents recognize and appreciate the hard work of the staff and is one way they actively give back to the people who help them every day. Which leads us to our next point. Thirwood staff and residents are one big happy family.
One Big Happy Family

Thirwood Place employs people in countless departments. From nursing and sales to housekeeping, maintenance and more, each department plays a role that contributes to the greater good of Thirwood.
The maintenance team allows for easy living. From hanging a TV in your apartment to shoveling the walkway that leads to your car, maintenance is the reason residents can sit back and enjoy their time. Our incredible team of nurses has an understanding of the needs of every new resident that walks through the door. That way, no matter the situation or emergency, the Thirwood team is equipped to handle the situation.

If a resident enjoys their meals in the main dining room, there is a very high likelihood their usual server will already know what they like to drink and anticipate how they want their meal. Our kitchen and dining team works with the residents directly so they can have the best culinary experience possible.
The Dining Committee meets with our Executive Director, Executive Chef, and Food and Beverage Manager quarterly to discuss anything and everything food. In 2025, our dining committee created a resident recipe book as well entitled “Stirred with Memories: Resident Recipes.” “Stirred with Memories” includes over seventy recipes from the kitchen of Thirwood residents.
Something for Everyone
There are multiple styles of living at Thirwood. Independent Living takes up the majority of our Thirwood’s population. Our main building includes one- and two- bedroom apartments equipped with full kitchens, appliances, outdoor decks and patios and laundry inside the apartment. Thirwood also has The Village. The Village is 28 town-home style apartments that sit separately from the main building. Village residents make their way to the main building for activities and dining but enjoy all the same services as Independent residents inside the building.

Thirwood Place also includes Assisted Living at The Cove for those residents who eventually need extra help with activities of daily living. What makes the Cove so nice is that Independent residents know it’s there if they ultimately need more assistance and we are happy to provide that for them.
Ultimately, there is something for everyone at Thirwood Place. Whether you’re downsizing, looking to move to a community for socializing, or you need a little extra help Thirwood is here to be that help.
