Summer at Thirwood Place

Nothing quite compares to a Cape Cod summer. There’s no better feeling than crossing the Cape Cod Canal and sensing the salty ocean air. The smell of summer. The Cape is home to an endless variety of summer activities. Our beaches are the obvious choice for visitors but the Cape is also home to many museums, art galleries, antique shops, live performance venues and more. At Thirwood Place we feel strongly about ensuring that our residents can take advantage of all Cape Cod has to offer. Especially during the summer season.

Activities

Five elderly women sit around a blue-checkered table outside, smiling and enjoying snacks and drinks as a curious animal wanders nearby.

If you follow us on Facebook or know someone who lives at Thirwood Place, you’ve probably heard about our vast activities calendar. At any given time, our activities calendar is structured around the preferences and abilities of our residents. During the summer we typically try to incorporate excursions and internal events that take advantage of the Cape landscape.

The Cape Playhouse is an extremely popular venue in Dennis. Each summer they put on multiple productions and have a very successful turnout.  The Cape Playhouse is a summer hotspot here and we try to get our residents to a show depending on interest. In the past we’ve also taken residents on a boat cruise of Cape Cod Canal.

We’ve also done a few outings to Provincetown which allow our residents to do a little shopping and enjoy a nice meal on the water. There’s nothing better than having dinner with a water view while the sunsets over the ocean. Our residents have also enjoyed trips to Truro Vineyards and various seafood restaurants around the Cape. Excursions like these allow our residents to socialize outside of Thirwood while enjoying their Cape Cod summer.

During the summer at Thirwood you can also find our residents enjoying some fun summer barbecues. We host them outside on our sun deck so everyone can soak up some fresh air and vitamin C. Even our arts and crafts are summer themed. Last month in Assisted Living our residents made a Cape Cod beach in a bottle. They filled small glass bottles with colored sand, shells and other decorative ocean items. (Picture below.)

Dining

A lobster roll and French fries are artfully arranged on a white plate, showcasing the culinary appeal of this beloved animal from the sea, ready for dining.

Another aspect of the Thirwood Place lifestyle that we are known for is our food. Anytime we take a potential resident on a tour of the building a resident will stop them and let them know that the food is AMAZING. Our menu rotates every six weeks and during the summer months it is structured around summer staples. Refreshing summer salads and some of the most delicious seafood dishes imaginable. Our residents don’t need to go down the street for a famous Cape Cod lobster roll because we provide them here.

Our next episode of Taste of Thirwood is actually going to be highlighting some of these popular summer stables. Click here to see more of our amazing menu options at Thirwood Place.

Blue Rock, Flax Pond, and The Grounds

A large bush covered in bright pink flowers blooms under a clear blue sky, attracting passing animal visitors.

In addition to our in-house activities and dining there are other perks to living at Thirwood that can be taken advantage of during the summer months. At Thirwood Place we are incredibly lucky to be on 40 beautiful acres overlooking Flax Pond. Our residents have full access to Flax Pond and can take advantage of the beach and beautiful view.

Another benefit to sitting on 40 acres of land is that we’ve turned our grounds into a summer oasis equipped with walking trails, benches, and seating areas with tables, umbrellas, and chairs. The combination of our beautiful landscaping and wildlife create the perfect relaxing environment. Whether you want to take a stroll amongst the summer flowers or sit on a bench to soak up the sun, you don’t even need to leave the property to enjoy Cape Cod summer. Our residents also have access to garden beds they can tend to during the summer months.

Additionally, our residents also enjoy the perk of access to Blue Rock Golf Course. Golfing is a huge summer activity on the Cape. All residents at Thirwood Place are given complimentary golf privileges at Blue Rock.
