The Cape Cod Lifestyle

Grassy dunes lead to a serene sandy beach and calm blue sea under a partly cloudy sky, offering an ideal setting for senior living.

You can find a senior living village anywhere in the United States. You might be someone who decides to downsize or retire within the same location you’ve been living for most of your life. Maybe you decide to relocate somewhere new to be closer to your children or other family members. In any case, making the move into a senior living community like Thirwood Place is a major decision because it represents the next chapter of your life.

At Thirwood Place, we feel extremely lucky to be on Cape Cod. Whether you’ve lived here your entire life or you’re what locals refer to as a “washashore,” so many people choose to settle down on the Cape. The reasons for this are obvious to us, the staff at Thirwood Place, but we figured we’d provide an explanation.

Why the Cape?

The real question might actually be why NOT the Cape? The second you cross the Cape Cod Canal and open the car window you’re immediately engulfed in the smell of salt and ocean life. A smell that would give you goosebumps immediately if you’ve experienced it before. It’s a smell that means you’ve officially made it to the Cape. The light and breezy atmosphere of all our little towns is unmatched. Each community has its own charm and local establishments for which they’re known. Yes, of course there are other beautiful locations around the U.S that have senior living options, but we think Cape Cod is unique.

The National Seashore, Rail Trail and general natural beauty allow for a strong emphasis on excursions and activities that keep our residents on the go. Whether it’s a trail walk in Dennis, an excursion to Provincetown, or lunch at the Brazilian Grill in Hyannis, our activities allow our residents to feel like they are enmeshed in Cape Cod culture.

We also take great pride in the grounds of Thirwood Place. When you’re located in a space that has such rich wildlife and beautiful greenery you want to take full advantage. Although our residents have the ability to go off property if they choose, we also have incredibly well-kept grounds. The landscaping at Thirwood Place is truly breathtaking and encapsulates the Cape’s natural beauty. That way, if you don’t feel like leaving the property for a few days you still experience the beauty of Cape Cod right outside your patio or deck. One of our residents, Naomi Scott, even said in a previous interview that she and her husband who are Village residents, regularly walk the grounds (weather-permitting) because it’s just so beautiful. Thank you for appreciating that, Naomi!

Nostalgia

As mentioned, some of our residents are from the Cape or have lived here for the most recent portion of their life. They also might be people who had a second home here, ultimately decided to retire to Cape Cod but needed to downsize into a senior living village. Additionally, the smaller towns and communities on the Cape create a sense of familiarity and community that was almost unintentionally built into our business model. So many of our residents wind up knowing each other because they attended the same church or bowling league. It’s so nice for our residents to revisit old friendships they may not have thought about in years.

Thirwood Place is a community where you can make new friends while still keeping the old. There have been countless times when new residents arrive, and they end up having a mutual friend with someone they met in the dining room or during an activity. It really goes to show the tightknit nature of the Cape Cod community.

Seafood

We might be biased, but Cape Cod provides some of the best seafood in the entire country. Our residents get to take full advantage of that. We famously have a 5-star chef on staff. John Payne, is committed to providing our residents with updated and diverse menus. We also collaborate with a dietician from Cape Cod Healthcare. That way our meals are both delicious and nutritious. In addition to that we have daily seafood deliveries. Only the freshest lobster salad for our residents!

At Thirwood Place you’ll also be dining with a view. Our dining room overlooks the beautiful Flax Pond. This gives our dining room the ambiance of a fine dining establishment. There is nothing more Cape Cod than a water view while you’re dining. A lot of our resident’s drive, but we also provide transportation in some cases. That way, they still have access to all the local shops and restaurants they love.

The Halls of Thirwood Place

Finally, one of the homiest aspects of the Thirwood Place environment are the hallways. Our residents not only decorate the outside of their apartments, but they also help to furnish and decorate the walls of Thirwood. They do this by donating art and furniture from their previous homes. Now, you might be asking …what does this have to do with the Cape?

Well, our residents, as with many people, take huge pride in where they come from. As you pass one resident’s unit you might see a painting of Nauset Light or a sign that says “Chatham.” The Thirwood halls are lined with personal art that is so specific to Cape Cod and the Islands. We have a lot of historical art pieces and timeless art that captures the beaches of the Cape. When you walk through Thirwood you know you’re on Cape Cod and you know you are home.
