(SOUTH YARMOUTH) – The residents of Thirwood Place in South Yarmouth are continuing a long-standing tradition of providing scholarships for staff members and their children who continue their education after high school.

A total of $10,000 has been awarded to 15 recipients in 2019. All the money that funds the Polly Hopkins Scholarship Program comes from donations given by residents of Thirwood Place.

Each year, the Resident’s Council initiates the fund drive. Acceptance into the program requires completion of college studies according to the standards set in place by the Scholarship Committee.

The scholarship program has been active for over fifteen years and has been an invaluable asset to the employees and their children in their pursuit of higher education.

The effort is named in honor of the late Ms. Polly Hopkins, an art teacher and head of the Art Department at Dennis-Yarmouth High School for many years.

Upon retirement, Ms. Hopkins lived at Thirwood Place until her passing in 2006. While at Thirwood she instituted an art program for the residents that remains active to this day.

To be considered, an applicant must be a full-time student with a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours per semester.

Applicants who choose to carry fewer than 12 credit hours during a semester will be considered a part-time student. Awarding of a partial scholarship is at the discretion of the committee.

Graduate students will be governed by the same requirements as undergraduate students.

To be considered for scholarship funds, a student must maintain a grade of C+ or better in all courses. Transcripts submitted with courses not completed jeopardize a student’s consideration for scholarship funds.
